Brown trout’s are the cousin of the rainbows. At 60 to 70 degrees they like warmer water. They are located in some lakes and in flowing streams and reach the size of 2 pounds in small streams. At the Manistee River in Michigan in Sept 2009 the largest one was caught on the record of 41 pounds.

They range in color starting from silver with few spots and a white belly to a brown color with a white belly. They too live about 10 years. Brown trout are hard to hook and are very smart.

They can be a challenge and are very timid. You need to be very patient if you are trying to catch this type of fish. The best bait to use is stonefly nymphs, dry flies, and streamers.

The brook trout is generally dark green to brown color with spots on the sides with a red belly.

They live to be about 7 years and prefer colder water of 40 to 50 degrees. They can be quite wild when hooking and travel in schools. They put a fierce fight. While casting into shallow bottoms the best bait to use is a spinner. They are quite fun to catch.

So in North America the three basic types of trout found are the Brown, Rainbow, and Brook trout. Each trout species is different from other and require different lures for each. When caught each are equally rewarding.
